Japan Update Through Japan-America Societies

NAJAS announced in the fall of 2012 a first round grant from The Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Japan for three "Japan Matters through Japan-America Societies" events to be held at Japan-America Societies. A selection committee chose three societies from among eight applications to NAJAS.

The grants, administered by NAJAS, offered these three societies the opportunity to undertake a large-scale event to update their membership on the state of US-Japan relations, emphasizing significant impacts on local areas. It offered The Sasakawa Peace Foundation an opportunity to participate in Japan-related events outside of areas it knows well. Each society is developing a plan to sustain the event beyond the initial grant.

Following a successful "Japan Matters" series, NAJAS announced in the summer of 2013 the first round of a three-year grant from The Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Japan for five "Japan Update through Japan-America Societies" events to be held at Japan-America Societies. A selection committee chose five societies for Year One in 2013-14 and another five societies for Year Two in 2014-15. "Japanese Opinion Leaders" grants were offered to five Japan-America societies.

In 2015, NAJAS consolidated the progress to date by offering partial funding for eight "repeat" events and one first-time host event at full funding as Year 3 of the program. The thirteen previous hosts had made progress towards sustaining the events but still needed funding and support to accomplish the most important part of the event; a speaker from Japan.

Over the course of the three year grant, NAJAS plans to extend the "Japan Update" opportunity to fifteen Japan-America Societies. In addition to the three participant in "Japan Matters", this would cover nearly 1/2 of our membership. It will be the largest program offering we have been able to offer our societies and will extend to nearly every corner of the United States.

NAJAS and our members are grateful for The Sasakawa Peace Foundation's support for this program. We deeply appreciate the presence of Foundation representatives at NAJAS' Annual Conference in August, 2013 and September, 2014. A unique partnership, The "Japan Update Through Japan-America Societies" program is emblematic of a broader trend of complementary organizations combining each other's strengths to work on a common purpose.
