Long considered "a nation of copiers," Japan has historically established their own cultural forms by modifying borrowed ideas from other cultures. Many have seen this in a negative light, however this international symposium hopes to challenge the stereotypes attached to the works of utsushi through a look at the issues of reproduction, allusion, transculturation, adaptation and pedagogy in the Japanese art tradition.
